Justice Asoka de Silva took oaths as Sri Lanka’s 32nd Chief Justice (CJ) before President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 8th June 2009. Justice Asoka de Silva, a senior-most Sri Lankan judge and a legal luminary, has been serving in Sri Lankan courts for the past 37 years before being climaxed in his career as Sri Lanka’s 32nd Chief Justice.

William Gopallawa, MBE (September 17, 1897 - January 31, 1981) was the last Governor General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972 and became the first (non-executive) President of Sri Lanka when Ceylon declared it self a republic in 1972 and changed its name to Sri Lanka.

The distinguished Sri Lankan medical research scientist Professor Malik Peiris was formally admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Science on July 14 2006 at a ceremony in London, for his outstanding work on human viral infections that causes respiratory diseases including SARS and avian flu, and for previous studies on antibody enhancement of viral replication.
